Piltdown Gravel Pit

The Piltdown Gravel Pit sits just outside Lewes as a rather unusual piece of British archaeological infamy. This is where, in 1912, the famous 'Piltdown Man' skull fragments were supposedly discovered - a hoax that fooled the scientific establishment for over four decades. Walking out here now, you'll find yourself in unremarkable Sussex countryside with a modest information board marking the spot. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no café. Just a field and the weight of a rather embarrassing chapter in palaeontology.

It's the kind of place that appeals to a very specific crowd: history obsessives who enjoy a bit of debunking, school groups studying scientific method gone wrong, and anyone fascinated by how even experts can be spectacularly duped. Go if you're nearby and interested in how science gets things spectacularly wrong. Otherwise, don't detour specially.
