Piet Mondrian

Winchester's High Street has a rather unexpected resident - a proper Piet Mondrian bollard, plonked right there among the shops and cafes. It's one of those public art installations that stops you mid-stride, making you do a double-take at what's essentially traffic furniture masquerading as modern art. The geometric lines and primary colours are unmistakably Mondrian: bold reds, yellows, blues and blacks in that signature grid pattern he made famous.

It's not going to take you hours. You'll see it, photograph it if you're that way inclined, and move on. But that's rather the point of public art - it punctures the everyday. Art history buffs will get a kick out of spotting it; kids might be intrigued by the bright colours breaking up the usual grey street furniture. It's free, obviously, because it's just sitting there on the pavement.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Hookpit Farm or Holden Farm are both solid choices for the area - this is a ten-minute wander from Winchester's town centre. Pair it with a proper browse around the cathedral, a coffee, and maybe some shopping. The bollard works best as part of a half-day exploring Winchester itself rather than a destination in its own right. Worth a look if you're in town anyway, but don't plan your entire trip around it.
