Pier Landerne

The pier juts out into the Menai Strait like something from a postcard nobody really sends anymore - functional, a bit weathered, thoroughly Welsh. This is Pier Landerne, just outside Caernarfon, where locals fish and tourists wander to the end just to say they've done it.

It's short work - you can walk the length in five minutes flat. What makes it worth the detour is the view back towards Caernarfon Castle, which sits across the water looking properly imposing. On a clear day the whole stretch of North Wales coastline opens up. The pier itself isn't fancy. There's no amusement arcade or fish and chips kiosk, which means it stays genuinely quiet even when the region gets busy.

Families with young kids get restless after twenty minutes unless they're keen on fishing or spotting waders. Photographers and walkers will find it does the job - it's an easy add-on to a morning in Caernarfon rather than a destination in itself. The surrounding area is good for a longer walk along the Strait if you've got the legs for it.
