Picnic Benches

A simple picnic site near Lewes with benches - that's the lot, really. No fancy facilities, no visitor centre, just tables where you can sit down with a sandwich and a flask. It's the sort of place you'd stumble upon while walking the South Downs rather than plan a trip around.

That said, if you're camped at The Secret Campsite or Dernwood Farm Glamping just down the road, it's a perfectly decent spot to base yourself for lunch between walks. The benches mean you're not eating on the grass or balancing a plate on your lap, which matters more than it sounds when you've got kids in tow. Walkers will appreciate the location - you're clearly positioned along a route or near something worth exploring on foot.

Don't expect views, facilities, or atmosphere. This isn't a destination; it's a practical stop. If you're the type who enjoys a picnic and doesn't need entertainment beyond good food and fresh air, you'll get on fine. Everyone else might find it a bit underwhelming - there's nothing to do once you've eaten.

Free, obviously. No gates, no staff, no car park to speak of. Allow twenty minutes unless you're dawdling over a thermos. Best visited as part of a longer walking day rather than in isolation. The nearby parks - Horam Manor Country Park especially - offer far more if you want something with a bit more to it.
