Phyllis Currie Nature Reserve

The Phyllis Currie Nature Reserve sits quietly on the eastern side of Braintree, a proper Essex wetland where you can actually hear yourself think. Walkers and bird enthusiasts will get the most from it. Kids can manage it, though don't expect them to stay entertained for more than a couple of hours unless they're genuinely keen on spotting wildlife. The ground can be damp, so proper footwear matters.
