Philips Park, Prestwich

There's a proper little nature reserve tucked away in Prestwich that most people driving past on the way to Bury wouldn't give a second glance. Philips Park is the kind of place you stumble upon when you're actually looking for it - a genuine working wetland that's managed for wildlife rather than manicured like some fancy gardens. The reserve is excellent for spotting water birds. You'll see herons, if you're patient, and all manner of ducks that I couldn't name even if I tried. The walking paths are decent enough, nothing too demanding, and they loop around the water in a way that keeps things interesting.

Bird watchers will get the most from it, but families with children who aren't the screaming type will find it peaceful for an hour or so. The kids might tire quickly if they're expecting swings and a playground - this is genuine nature reserve territory, which means quiet observation and maybe a bit of patience. Summer's the best time when the birds are active and the paths are dry underfoot.

If you're based at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road - which is a solid spot itself - Philips Park makes a straightforward morning walk before heading into Bury for lunch. It's free to access and the kind of place that works best when you're not in a rush. Don't expect facilities or anything fancy. Just come with binoculars and a willingness to stand still for five minutes.
