Pheasant`s Chase

Dark woodland paths wind through this ancient forest just outside Beaumaris, where pheasants still rustle through the undergrowth that gives the place its name. The trees close in overhead, creating a proper sense of being somewhere wild despite Anglesey's generally open landscape.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty of room to roam here. The paths aren't marked particularly well, which adds to the adventure but means keeping little ones close. Dog walkers get a good workout too - the terrain's varied enough to tire out most breeds.

What strikes you most is how different this feels from the rest of Anglesey. While the island's known for its coastal walks and open spaces, Pheasant's Chase offers something darker and more enclosed. You'll hear plenty of wildlife but might not see much beyond the occasional red squirrel.

The forest works well as a morning expedition if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Kingsbridge Caravan Park or Tros Y Waen. Allow a couple of hours for a decent explore, though teenagers might get restless after one. Best avoided in very wet weather when the paths turn properly muddy.

It's free to wander (as far as anyone knows), but don't expect facilities or signposting. Bring your own drinks and be prepared to navigate by instinct rather than waymarkers.
