National Trust - Penrhyn Castle & Garden

The castle rises out of the Anglesey landscape like something from a Victorian fever dream - all turrets and neo-Gothic excess, built on serious slate money in the 1820s. Inside, you're walking through rooms crammed with furniture, art, and the kind of clutter that tells you exactly how the landed gentry lived when they had more bedrooms than sense.

The real draw is wandering the grounds. The gardens are genuinely lovely - mature trees, open lawns, and enough space to let kids burn off energy without feeling like you're herding them through a museum. Allow a good three hours if you want to see both castle and gardens properly. The castle itself can feel a touch gloomy on dull days, so pick decent weather if you can.

It's a National Trust property, so expect admission fees and the usual car park charges. Beaumaris is just down the road, which makes it easy to combine with exploring the medieval castle town itself - or use one of the nearby caravan parks like Kingsbridge or Tros Y Waen as a base for a few days.

Who'll enjoy it most? History types and families after a half-day activity. The gardens appeal to walkers. It's not a all-day destination unless you're proper into Victorian interiors, but it's worth the detour if you're already on Anglesey.
