Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery

The museum sits right in the heart of Petersfield, a Georgian market town that still feels properly lived-in despite the tourists. It's a proper local affair - the kind of place where you'll find earnest displays about the town's past alongside rotating contemporary art that actually makes you think rather than just nod along politely.

You get a real sense of what Petersfield was about: medieval market town, later coaching inn hub, that sort of thing. The art gallery side changes its programme regularly, so you might catch anything from local painters to touring exhibitions. It's not vast - you can work through it in an hour or so without rushing, which means it slots perfectly into a morning before heading out to the South Downs for a proper walk.

Historically minded visitors and anyone interested in Hampshire's role in England's story will get the most from it. Kids might find the local history a bit dry unless they're genuinely into that sort of thing, but the art shows sometimes have interactive elements worth checking on.

It's free to get in, which is excellent. The staff seem to actually care about what they're doing, which you notice immediately. If you're staying at Adhurst Yurts just down the road - and it's excellent for a back-to-nature break - this makes a good rainy-day plan before heading back out to Cedar Valley's walking routes nearby. Worth an hour of your time, certainly.
