Petersfield Heath & Pond/Lake

The Heath sprawls across Petersfield's eastern edge like someone's forgotten garden - wild, watery, and genuinely worth an afternoon. You'll find yourself on proper walking paths threading through heathland, with a decent-sized pond that actually draws birds instead of just ducks. It's the sort of place where you can spot dragonflies in summer and get genuinely lost in winter when the bracken dies back.

Walkers will find the most value here. The terrain's gentle enough for families with younger kids, though the ground can get boggy after rain - wellies aren't optional. Give yourself an hour minimum if you're just after fresh air and a wander; make it two if you want to circle the pond and actually notice what's flying overhead. There's no tearoom or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared.

What makes it work as part of a Heath holiday is the proximity to Adhurst Yurts just down the road. You could easily spend a morning hiking here before heading back for a late lunch, or use it as an evening circuit walk when the light's good. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but it does the job - real Hampshire nature without the crowds you'd get at bigger reserves. The pond in particular comes alive in spring when the frogs spawn and the whole place feels less suburban.
