Perbean Beach

Rocky outcrops frame this small sandy cove that feels genuinely wild compared to Cornwall's busier stretches. Getting there requires a decent walk from the nearest parking spot near Boswinger, but that's exactly why Perbean Beach keeps its peaceful character. The sand is proper golden stuff when the tide's out, though it disappears completely at high water - timing matters here.

Families with older kids who don't mind the trek will love having the place largely to themselves. Rock pooling is excellent at low tide, and the swimming is safe enough if you're sensible about it. Younger children might struggle with the walk and the lack of facilities, so this isn't one for pushchair-wielding parents.

Bring everything you need because there's absolutely nothing here - no loos, no cafes, no deck chairs for hire. That's the point, really. It's proper wild Cornwall, the sort of place that feels like your own private discovery even though locals have known about it for generations.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around Veryan or Heligan puts you in easy striking distance. Pentewan Sands Holiday Park is less than five miles away and makes a good base for exploring this quieter stretch of the south Cornwall coast. Allow half a day including the walk, and check the tide times before you set off.
