Pentre Mawr Park

The woodland slopes above Abergele hold something quietly special - Pentre Mawr is a proper nature reserve, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Conwy's coastline gets the crowds, but this sits back from all that, carpeted in native broadleaf trees with streams cutting through the valley floor.

What you get is woodland walking rather than manicured trails. The terrain's moderate - not punishing, but it demands decent boots if the ground's wet. On a clear day you'll catch views toward the coast, and the birdlife here justifies bringing binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Local walkers rate it highly for an hour or two's ramble, maybe three if you're thorough.

It's free and open year-round, though the place transforms between seasons. Spring and autumn are best - summer draws midges in the damper sections, winter can be properly muddy. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Parkdean's Ty Mawr or Golden Gate are both under two miles away - makes this an easy morning or afternoon outing to break up a beach-focused week. It's the sort of place that slots perfectly into a coastal holiday without requiring serious planning.
