Penstrowed Hill

The walk up Penstrowed Hill rewards you with proper views across the Powys countryside, and it's nowhere near as taxing as some of the bigger summits in Mid Wales. The peak itself sits just outside Caersws, making it an ideal leg-stretcher if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Love2Stay or Maesmawr Farm are barely a mile away, so no excuses about distance.

From the top, you get that satisfying sense of elevation without needing specialist kit or a full day's graft. The hill gives you clear sightlines across the valley, and on a decent day the views stretch far enough to make the short climb feel worthwhile. It's the sort of place where you can properly see how the landscape folds and changes direction.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited - there's not much at the summit itself, just the view and the wind. A good choice if you're already staying at one of the caravan parks in the area and want a morning walk that doesn't eat into the rest of your day. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photographs or just sitting about enjoying the quiet.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water and wear proper boots if it's been wet. Free to access, naturally. Pair it with a visit to one of the other peaks nearby, or use it as a warm-up before tackling something more substantial in the Cambrian Mountains.
