Penrith Castle

The red sandstone ruins of Penrith Castle dominate the town's skyline like a giant's discarded plaything. Built in the 15th century by Ralph Dacre to defend against Scottish raiders, it's now an English Heritage site where you can wander freely among the crumbling walls and towers.

It's genuinely worth a quick visit if you're staying at Lowther Holiday Park or any of the caravan sites within a couple of miles - the castle sits right on the edge of town, impossible to miss. The outer walls are remarkably well preserved, and you can walk the perimeter in about twenty minutes. Kids will enjoy scrambling around the ruins and imagining the chaos of a medieval siege. Historians get a proper kick out of the story - these walls actually saw action against border raiders, not just theoretical threats.

Free entry, and there's no official opening hours rubbish to worry about since you're just peering at ruins from outside. The best light for photographs happens mid-afternoon when the sun hits that distinctive red stone. Allow forty minutes if you're thorough, fifteen if you just want a decent Instagram shot.

If you're basing yourself at one of the local holiday parks for a week in the Lake District, this makes a solid town-day addition to more demanding walks elsewhere. Penrith itself has proper shops and cafes, so you can couple it with an actual morning rather than just treating the castle as a standalone stop. It's not dramatic enough to justify a long drive on its own, but genuinely interesting if you're passing through.
