The climb up to Penrith Beacon rewards you with views that stretch right across the Eden Valley and into the Lake District fells beyond. The beacon itself is small - a stone tower that's been rebuilt several times over the centuries - but what matters is the 360-degree perspective you get from up here. On a clear day you can pick out High Street and Helvellyn across the valley. It's the sort of place where walkers genuinely linger, and families with older kids will find it manageable without it becoming a slog.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, and admission is free, which is fine. Allow an hour if you want to sit about and soak it in, less if you're just ticking off the view. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

It slots nicely into a Cumbrian caravan holiday - you're right on Penrith's doorstep, making it ideal for an easy morning outing before heading to the Lakes proper. Crossfells Campsite sits just 2.9 miles away and is consistently well-reviewed, while Park Foot Holiday Park over at Pooley Bridge (six miles out) offers more extensive facilities if you need them. Skip it if you're after a lengthy walk or formal attractions, but if you want a quick, free vantage point that actually delivers on views, it's worth the short detour.
