Penmachno Park

The River Machno cuts through this valley like it's got somewhere urgent to be, and Penmachno Park sits right along its course just outside Betws-y-Coed. It's a proper nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction - think woodland walks, riverside paths, and the kind of spot where you'll actually see wildlife rather than queuing to take a photo of it.

Walkers will find the most value here. The terrain varies from gentle riverside strolls to steeper climbs through the forest canopy, so you can pitch your effort level depending on what you fancy that day. The water is the real draw - the Machno has carved out some lovely gorge sections, and the sound of it rushing over rocks is the kind of background noise that makes you forget about emails for a bit. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; this is proper habitat rather than a petting zoo.

It's the sort of place that rewards getting out early, before day-trippers from Betws-y-Coed filter in. Two to three hours covers a decent chunk without feeling rushed, though you could easily spend longer if you're the sitting-on-rocks-contemplating-type.

If you're based at Conwy Valley Touring Park - the only one of the local holiday parks with decent reviews - Penmachno makes an excellent half-day excursion. It's close enough for a morning walk before heading elsewhere, but far enough that it feels like proper countryside rather than park filler. Free access and no crowds beats most attraction offerings.
