Penlan-Ffos

The walk up Penlan-Ffos rewards you with proper views across Carmarthenshire, and it's the sort of summit that doesn't demand mountaineering skills. From Carmarthen, it's easily reached on foot or by car if you're basing yourself at one of the local farms - Lan Farm Glamping or Church House Farm Getaways are both within striking distance.

Once you're up there, the landscape opens out. You get the sense of standing above the valley floor rather than genuinely remote, which is fine - this isn't about feeling isolated, it's about perspective. The walk itself takes most people under an hour each way depending on fitness and the route you take. Wear decent boots because the ground can be boggy, particularly after rain.

It works best for walkers after a half-day outing rather than an all-day expedition. Families with older kids will manage it fine. If you're staying at Woodland Rise or Quarry Lodge Campsite, it's the kind of thing you can knock out before lunch, then spend the afternoon elsewhere. Don't expect a café or facilities at the top - take water and something to eat if you want to linger.

The view across the farming country is worth the climb, though it's not the sort of place that will blow your mind if you've done much Welsh walking before. Worth adding to an itinerary if you're in the area, particularly if you're camping nearby and want to stretch your legs properly.
