Merlin's Hill Viewing Point

The pull-off at Merlin's Hill catches most people by surprise - you're driving through fairly ordinary Carmarthenshire countryside when suddenly the land drops away and you can see for miles. It's a proper vantage point overlooking the Towy Valley, with Carmarthen visible in the distance if the weather plays ball.

There's not much to it, truth be told. You park up, step out, and look. No visitor centre, no tea room, no interpretive panels telling you what you're meant to be seeing. It's refreshingly unspoilt for that reason, though it does mean you need to bring your own sense of what makes it special. On a clear day it's genuinely worth stopping for - the kind of spot where you understand why people used to think a wizard might actually live here. The views stretch across rolling farmland and woodland, and it's quiet enough that you can actually hear yourself think.

If you're staying at one of the local caravan parks - Quarry Lodge Campsite is nearest at under a mile away, or Lan Farm Glamping a bit further out - this is a ten-minute detour worth taking. Walkers and photographers will get more from it than families with small children, who'll likely be asking 'is that it?' within minutes. Go on a clear morning rather than late afternoon when the light gets harsh, and give yourself half an hour to actually sit and absorb it rather than just snapping a photo from the car park.
