Pendeen Lighthouse

The lighthouse stands on a windswept headland near Penzance, its white tower cutting through the Atlantic gusts with the kind of no-nonsense purpose you'd expect from a working beacon. Built in 1865, Pendeen still operates as an active aid to navigation, which means you're looking at the real thing - not some polished heritage attraction.

There's no visitor centre or gift shop here. What you get is the lighthouse itself, craggy cliffs, and some proper Cornish coastal drama. The walk around the headland is straightforward and takes about 45 minutes if you're not rushing. On a clear day the views stretch towards Mousehole and beyond. When the Atlantic's throwing a strop, it's genuinely atmospheric.

History enthusiasts will appreciate that this is one of Cornwall's most important lighthouses - the beam still guides ships every night. Families with older kids who can manage coastal paths will find it worthwhile, though younger children might get restless once they've had a look at the tower. The nearby Roselands Caravan Camping Park, just 3.6 miles away, makes it an easy slot into a broader coastal exploration.

Free to visit and open to the elements year-round. Go when the weather's decent - there's nothing to shelter under, and the wind here has teeth. The real appeal is the rawness of it all, not any polished visitor experience. It's Cornwall doing what Cornwall does best.
