Pen-y-garn

The walk up Pen-y-garn from Carmarthen takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off with proper 360-degree views across the Carmarthenshire countryside. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a rounded hill, really - but on a clear day you can see right across to the Brecon Beacons in the distance, which makes it feel like you've accomplished something worthwhile.

The summit itself is bare and windswept, with just the remnants of an Iron Age fort to suggest why anyone bothered climbing up here centuries ago. There's not much interpretation on the ground, so if you're into archaeology you'll want to do your homework beforehand. Most people come for the walk and the views rather than the history, and that's fair enough.

It works brilliantly as a half-day outing if you're staying at one of the local glamping spots - Embrace the Space is only three miles away and has hot tubs that make for a proper reward once you've got back down. The Hiveaway, equally close, offers a similar vibe. Both give you that luxury-camping experience without needing to drive far for decent walking.

Go on a clear morning if you can. The peak gets busy with local runners and dog walkers on weekends, so an early start gives you the views without the crowds. Allow a couple of hours including the walk back down - it's steeper on the descent than it looks from below, so proper footwear matters.
