Crugebolion

The Iron Age hillfort at Crugebolion sits overlooking the Carmarthenshire countryside like something from a half-forgotten map. You're standing on proper ancient ground here - earthworks and ramparts that saw Romano-British activity, all of it now a haven for walkers who fancy a bit of archaeology with their views.

It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity more than convenience. The site itself is free to explore, though there's no visitor centre or tea shop - just you, the landscape, and whatever sense of history you bring with you. Most people allow an hour or so, maybe two if you're the type to sit and take it all in. The walk up is gentle enough, but wear proper shoes and check the ground after rain.

Walkers absolutely get the most from Crugebolion. It's not a destination for small children who need entertainment every five minutes, but teenagers with even a passing interest in archaeology will engage properly. The wider views across Carmarthenshire make it a solid addition to a walking holiday rather than a standalone trip.

Stay at Embrace the Space - those luxury yurts with hot tubs are only 3.2 miles away - and you've got a proper base for exploring both the hillfort and Woodland Rise Camping and Caravan Park further out. Carmarthen town itself is close enough for supplies and proper meals. Go early in the day if you want solitude; it's not mobbed but it's also not signposted to death.
