Allt Ffynnon-wen

The forest at Allt Ffynnon-wen sits just outside Whitland in Carmarthenshire, and it's a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction - which is exactly the point. You're looking at dense native forest with decent trails that wind through the trees without any of the visitor centre nonsense. The paths are muddy in places, especially after rain, but they're manageable and give you that genuine forest feel rather than a sanitised park experience.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a quick stroll - allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly - but it's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Families with older kids who don't mind getting their boots dirty will enjoy it; younger children might find it a bit samey after half an hour. The canopy is thick enough that it feels sheltered even on windy days, which is useful given this is Wales.

It works well as a morning venture if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Embrace the Space or Frowen Fields Eco Glamping just a few miles away. You could easily combine it with exploring Whitland itself or heading towards the Tywi Valley. There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, and you can simply park and walk - which keeps it beautifully low-key. Go in autumn when the light filters through differently, or after a dry spell when the paths are least treacherous.
