Pen-Y-Gaer

The walk up Pen-Y-Gaer rewards you with genuine sweeping views across the Clywedog Valley and into the heart of Mid Wales. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain - 1,595 feet - so expect a solid uphill hike without needing technical gear or mountaineering experience.

This one suits walkers who want a genuine peak but aren't after an all-day expedition. The summit comes with an old Iron Age fort, earthworks you can still make out if you're paying attention. Nothing to get excited about in terms of visible remains, but the historical bones are there if you care about that sort of thing. Kids aged ten-plus will manage it without complaint, though younger ones might find the climb tedious.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip from Llanidloes, which sits just down the valley. There's no charge to walk it - it's open access land. The weather here changes fast, so check conditions before heading out. Spring and autumn are best; summer crowds are lighter than on the more famous peaks, which is rather the point.

If you're camped at Red Kite Touring Park or Clywedog Riverside, both within a couple of miles, this makes a solid morning walk before lunch back in town. Llanidloes itself has decent cafes and shops, so you won't be stuck for somewhere to eat afterwards. Pair it with the Clywedog Dam walk nearby if you've got time - they work well together as a day out.
