Pen y Cil

The walk up Pen y Cil starts gentle enough, winding through scrubland above Pwllheli before the path decides to get serious. It's a proper little peak - nothing that'll intimidate experienced walkers, but steep enough in places to catch your breath and make you appreciate the views when you finally stop complaining about your legs. The summit itself is modest, nothing dramatic, but the vantage point across the Llyn Peninsula and out towards Cardigan Bay makes the effort worthwhile. On a clear day you can pick out the far hills; on a grey one, it's still moody and atmospheric in that Welsh way. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how often you stop to take photos. Families with decent-aged kids will manage it fine - it's not a technical climb, just a steady slog uphill. Younger children might grumble. The whole thing feels genuinely wild and unspoilt, the sort of walk you'd do because you wanted to, not because it's on some top-ten list. If you're staying at any of the nearby glamping spots - Tyn Ddol, Treheli Farm, or Glampio Coed - this makes a solid half-day activity that doesn't demand specialist kit or superhuman fitness. Go in decent weather though. In fog it's just a muddy trudge to nowhere. Start early if you can; the afternoon light here gets properly special.
