Pen Y Bwlch-Coch

The walk up Pen y Bwlch-coch from Dolgellau rewards you with views across the Cader Idris range that justify every step. It's a proper fell rather than a gentle stroll - expect steep climbs and rocky terrain once you're past the initial path. The summit sits at 645 metres, which means the views stretch right across to the Snowdonian peaks on clear days, though I'll be honest, the weather in North Wales being what it is, you'll need to pick your moment.

This one suits walkers who don't mind a challenge and know their way around a hillside. Families with younger kids might find it a bit much for a single outing, though teenagers who've got their hiking legs will get a kick out of it. You're looking at a solid three to four hours round trip depending on fitness and how much you dawdle at the top.

Since it's unmanned and sits on open moorland, there's no entrance fee and no fixed hours - you go when it suits. That said, do check the weather and let someone know where you're headed. The ground can be boggy in places, so waterproof boots aren't optional.

Based out of one of the nearby parks - Llwyn yr Helm and Torrent Walk are both within walking distance of Dolgellau - you could tackle this as part of a bigger Cader Idris hiking trip. It doesn't have the fame of its neighbour, which means the paths stay relatively quiet. Perfect if you want mountain air without the crowds.
