Pen Ucha'r-gwaith

The walk up Pen Ucha'r-gwaith from Betws-y-Coed isn't the trickiest peak in Snowdonia, but it rewards effort with proper views across the Conwy Valley. On a clear day you can see right across to the coast. The name means 'peak of the upper work' - a nod to old slate quarrying in the area - and once you're up there, you understand why those Victorian walkers made the trip.

It's a straightforward up-and-back route, nothing technical, which makes it ideal for families who've got confident young walkers or anyone wanting a morning's exercise without needing crampons and a rope. Allow a couple of hours return, depending on pace. The path winds through mixed woodland before opening onto moorland - that transition is quite lovely, actually. Go midweek if you can; weekends bring crowds from the holiday parks dotted nearby, particularly Maenan Abbey Caravan Park just 3.2 miles away.

This isn't a peak you'd travel hours to climb, but if you're based at one of the local glamping spots - Erw Glas or Snowdonia Glamping Holidays are both within five miles - it makes a solid afternoon outing. Free to walk, naturally. The real appeal sits in how it slots into a broader Snowdonia trip rather than standing alone as a destination. Weather can turn quickly, so check forecasts and start early. Betws-y-Coed itself has cafes and shops where you can grab supplies beforehand.
