Pen Nant y Garth

The walk up Pen Nant y Garth rewards you with proper panoramic views across Denbighshire and beyond - it's the kind of summit that makes the climb worthwhile without being gruelling. From Ruthin, it's only a short drive to the trailhead, and you're looking at a decent day out rather than an epic slog.

It's bracken-covered moorland for much of the ascent, so expect exposed terrain and muddy patches after rain. The path itself is well-trodden and reasonably clear, though it can be steep in sections. Walkers with half-decent fitness will manage it in a couple of hours up and down, and the views from the top take in the Vale of Clwyd and on clear days you can see across to the Snowdonia peaks. That's the real pull here - it's a walkers' mountain rather than a sightseers' one.

Bring proper boots and waterproofs even if the weather looks promising. Summer is best, when the bracken's at its finest and visibility is more likely to be decent. Winter can be grim and visibility shocking.

If you're camping at Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day option. It's the kind of walk that doesn't require too much planning - just turn up with decent kit and tackle it. Good for families with kids aged ten and up who enjoy a genuine hill walk. Not really a tourist attraction in the usual sense - just a proper Welsh moorland climb.
