Pelicans

The pelicans at Longleat are one of those unexpected pleasures you stumble upon when visiting the estate - proper wildlife, not the theme park attractions most people come for. You'll find them on the water features scattered across the grounds, and they're genuinely magnificent to watch. Their sheer size catches you off guard the first time you see one unfurling those enormous wings.

They're part of Longleat's broader collection, so you're not paying extra to see them - they come included with estate admission. How long you spend watching depends entirely on your patience. Five minutes if you're just passing through, or a proper half-hour if you've got kids who want to sit and observe them fishing. Children tend to get mesmerised, though you'll need to manage expectations about close encounters; these are wild birds operating on their own terms, not performing seals.

Historywise, Longleat's had exotic birds for decades, and the pelicans fit neatly into that tradition. The birds themselves are remarkably calm around visitors, which makes for decent photography if that's your thing.

Staying nearby - Center Parcs Longleat Forest or the Caravan Club site are both walking distance - means you can easily pop back to see them at different times of day. Early morning is genuinely worth the effort; far fewer crowds and the light's better. Warminster's only a couple of miles if you need supplies or a break from the estate.
