Peel of Lumphanan

Two grass-topped mounds rising abruptly from the Aberdeenshire countryside - that's the Peel of Lumphanan, and it's genuinely odd in the best way. This is a Norman motte-and-bailey, the earthwork remains of what was once a proper fortress, though nothing much stands now except the banks and bumps themselves. You can walk right up to it, and from the top the views across the surrounding land give you a real sense of why someone chose this spot to build a stronghold back in medieval times.

It's the kind of place that works brilliantly if you're into Scottish history or archaeology - the sort of visitor who gets excited about lumps in the ground when they understand what those lumps actually meant. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming after ten minutes unless they're the type who enjoy climbing and exploring rough terrain. The site is free to access and takes maybe 20-30 minutes if you're thorough about it.

Tullochvenus sits nearby, though it's tiny. If you're staying at Aboyne Loch Caravan Park - just 3.5 miles away, and genuinely excellent according to recent feedback - this makes for an easy morning's detour before heading out for something bigger. Combine it with exploring the broader Deeside area rather than treating it as a destination in itself. Worth the walk if you're already in the region, but don't go out of your way especially for it.
