About Mill Maud

The walk up Mill Maud rewards you with views across Aberdeenshire that stretch for miles in every direction. It's a proper Highland peak without the drama - nothing too technical, nothing that'll have you scrambling on loose rock, but enough of a climb to feel like you've earned the summit.

From the top you're looking out over the Cairngorms way off to the west, with the Don Valley sprawling below. On a clear day the visibility is excellent. The approach from Tullochvenus takes around ninety minutes depending on your pace and where exactly you park, and the terrain is mostly moorland and heather - pleasant enough underfoot when it's not boggy. Bring proper boots regardless.

This works particularly well if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks. Aboyne Loch, just 5 miles away, makes a solid base, and Tarland about 6 miles distant is good too. Both are well-equipped if you're bringing the family.

Who'll get the most from it? Walkers after something manageable without being dull. Families with kids aged eight and up. History types less so - there's no ruins or story here, just landscape. Allow three hours total if you're taking your time, and go in dry weather. The moorland drainage is dodgy when it's wet.

It's free, obviously - it's a hill. And it's genuinely worth the detour if you're in the area. Not famous enough to be crowded, but good enough that you'll wonder why more people don't bother with it.
