Tulloch Hill

A short walk from Tullochvenus takes you to one of Aberdeenshire's less fussed-over summits, and that's rather the point. Tulloch Hill isn't going to exhaust you, but it gives proper views across the Dee Valley once you're up there. The walk itself is straightforward enough - moorland paths, nothing technical, taking the better part of an hour or so to reach the top. You get the sense of real countryside without the crowds you'd find at Lochnagar or Cairngorms further west.

This is walkers' territory, plain and simple. If you're after a quick leg-stretch with a view, or you want something achievable between breakfast and lunch, it ticks both boxes. The surrounding moorland is open and fairly exposed, so weather matters - wind can pick up quickly, and mist will hide the views entirely. Choose a clear day and you'll see why locals keep quiet about it.

It works nicely as part of a broader Aberdeenshire walking trip. Base yourself at Haughton Holiday Park or Aboyne Loch Caravan Park - both within six miles - and you've got decent hill access without the drive times of the high Highlands. The nearest proper town is Tullochvenus, though it's small; you'll want to stock up in Ballater or Braemar if you're planning anything ambitious.

Families with capable walkers will manage fine. The very young or unfit should probably save their energy for easier ground. It's free, always accessible, and frankly worth an afternoon if the weather's on your side.
