Peat Hill

The walk up Peat Hill, just outside Biggar, takes about forty minutes at a steady pace. It's not technically demanding - the path is clear enough and the gradient reasonable - but it rewards the effort with views across the Lowlands that stretch for miles on a decent day.

What you get is moorland, honestly. Heather and grass, a few scattered rocks, and the sense of being properly away from things despite being minutes from town. On the way up, the landscape opens out gradually rather than dramatically, which some might find underwhelming. On the way down, though, you get the perspective shift - everything feels smaller, tighter, more arranged below you.

It's the sort of outing that works well for walkers who don't need drama or altitude records. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might flag on the return leg. The whole thing takes two to three hours if you're not dawdling. Free to visit, naturally.

If you're based at Mount View Caravan Park - which sits just 3.4 miles away - this makes a solid morning or early afternoon excursion. It's less spectacular than some Scottish peaks, but that's partly the point. There's something to be said for hills that don't require a full expedition, especially when you've got a caravan holiday to enjoy unhurried.
