Peart Wood

Peart Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Trowbridge, the sort of place that rewards you with quiet and decent paths rather than dramatic views. It's a straightforward forest - mixed deciduous trees, soft ground underfoot, birdsong if you're lucky enough to visit when it's not rammed. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum for a full loop, depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath on the gentle inclines.

Walkers will find it genuinely useful for a morning out. It's not challenging terrain, so families with younger kids or anyone just after a gentle stomp through the trees will manage fine. The woodland itself is unremarkable - no rare trees or dramatic clearings - but that's rather the point. Sometimes you want a walk without the postcard views. Bring a dog if you've got one; they'll have a better time than you will.

If you're camping at one of the nearby farms - Stowford Manor is only 2.6 miles away, or Brokerswood just 3.8 miles further - it makes a solid addition to your itinerary rather than a reason to visit. Free to access, naturally. No facilities to speak of, so go prepared. The Trowbridge area has enough farms and parks dotted about that you could string together several woodland walks if the weather's decent. Worth fitting in? Yes. Worth planning a trip around? Not really.
