Westwood Manor sits just outside Trowbridge as a proper working farmhouse rather than some grand stately pile - and that's precisely what makes it worth an afternoon. The house itself spans five centuries, with the oldest bit dating back to the 15th century, though it's been added to and fiddled with ever since, which gives it a lived-in feel most National Trust properties have lost. You'll wander through rooms that actually look like people inhabit them, with furniture that tells a story rather than screams "look but don't touch."

The real draw is the garden. It's been restored to something closer to what it would have looked like centuries back, with roses and period-appropriate planting that feels generous without being overly manicured. Allow a couple of hours here - longer if you're the type who sits on benches and reads. Families with younger kids might find the house itself a bit thin on entertainment (no interactive bits, no gift shop theatre), but primary school age upwards will get something from the stories dotted about.

It works brilliantly as part of a Wiltshire park holiday, particularly if you're based at Widbrook Barns just a mile and a half away. Combine it with walks around Trowbridge itself - there's proper countryside on the doorstep. Entry's through the National Trust (membership or day ticket required), and it's only open seasonally, so check before you go. Not flashy, but genuinely interesting.
