Paton's Copse

A small woodland tucked away near Swindon that's proper worth knowing about if you're based at Great Farm or Second Chance for a few days. Paton's Copse isn't going to dominate your itinerary - it's the sort of place you'd add to a morning walk rather than build a day around - but it's genuinely pleasant for that.

The trees here are mature and thick enough to block out most of the surrounding countryside noise, which is saying something given how close you are to Swindon itself. It's mixed woodland, so you get a decent variety underfoot: the paths can be muddy even days after rain, but that's part of the appeal if you're after something real rather than manicured.

This is dead good for families with younger kids who want a gentle woodland ramble without dramatic hills or tricky terrain. Dogs do well here too. You're looking at twenty minutes to half an hour for a proper mooch around if you're not rushing, an hour if you're treating it as your main event for the morning.

Walking types will find it a useful leg-stretch between the touring parks and wherever else you're headed in the area. It's free and open access as far as I can tell - no gates, no fees. Go when it's not raining if you value your shoes. Best visited as part of a broader Gloucestershire day rather than as a destination in itself, but the wood itself is genuinely good for what it is.
