Park Hill

The walk up Park Hill from Barnoldswick takes you through proper Lancashire moorland, with views that stretch across the Pennines on a clear day. It's not a mountain - more a substantial fell at 1,279 feet - but it delivers the sort of open-air satisfaction you're after without needing crampons or a packed rope.

Once you're up there, the reward is a 360-degree sweep of the landscape. To the north you can see into Yorkshire, south towards the Forest of Bowland. On a grey day it's moody and atmospheric. On a sunny afternoon, it's genuinely lovely. The walk itself is straightforward enough, though the moorland surface can be boggy after rain and the final push up is a bit steeper than you'd expect from the map.

This is walkers' territory, not the sort of place that'll entertain kids for hours once they've reached the top and eaten their snacks. That said, families after a decent half-day hike without serious scrambling will find it rewarding. Allow two to three hours from Barnoldswick town, including the summit loiter.

If you're based at one of the local holiday parks - Shay Gate Farm or Deerstone Glamping are close by - Park Hill makes a proper morning excursion before settling back for lunch. It connects well with walks into the wider moorland, so you're not limited to the peak itself. Bring a map, waterproof jacket, and realistic expectations about the weather. This is the Pennines, after all.
