Park Gate Wood

Walking into Park Gate Wood near Clitheroe, you're met with proper Lancashire woodland - the sort of place where the trees feel older than the council that manages them. It's a forest walk rather than a manicured attraction, so come expecting muddy paths and the real deal rather than visitor centres and gift shops.

The wood itself is solid for a couple of hours of rambling. You'll find yourself on winding trails through mixed broadleaf and conifer, with the undergrowth thick enough that you actually feel properly away from it all. It's the kind of place walkers genuinely enjoy - no crowds, no staged lookouts, just woodland that's doing what woodland does. The paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though a bit of navigation sense helps when the forks come up.

Families with older kids will have a decent time here, though younger ones might find it a touch samey after the first thirty minutes. It's free to access and you can stay as long as you fancy. Spring and autumn work best - less mud underfoot than winter, and you'll actually see the woodland floor rather than a uniform green canopy overhead.

If you're staying at Brickhouse Caravan Park or Beacon Fell View just down the road, this makes an easy morning or afternoon addition to your holiday without feeling like a scheduled attraction. It's close enough to Clitheroe that you're not burning fuel getting there, and it does the job if you want some proper air and a decent walk without the tourist machinery.
