Parish of St. Nicholas Dunnington

The Church of St. Nicholas sits in the quiet village of Dunnington, just outside York, and it's genuinely worth a detour if you're after some proper medieval architecture without the tourist crowds. The building itself dates back to the 14th century, though parts are older still - you can trace the changes in stonework if you look closely at the walls.

Inside, there's good carved woodwork and a decent chance of spotting some original features buried beneath centuries of restoration. The chancel's particularly fine. It's the kind of place where you'll spend twenty minutes max, but you'll come away having actually learned something about how these buildings evolved rather than just ticking a box.

This works brilliantly as part of a York church crawl - St. Nicholas is far less heaving than the Minster but tells you more about how village communities actually worshipped. Head into York centre for the big hitters, then loop back here for the real meat of the story. If you're staying at Fox Hill Holiday Park nearby, it's practically on your doorstep and gives you an excuse to explore Dunnington's lanes properly.

Drop in whenever you're passing. It's a working parish church, so check the door's open before you trek across the churchyard, but locals are usually welcoming. No charge for a look around. Plan on ten to fifteen minutes unless you're a serious architecture student - then make it thirty.
