Parish Crag

The walk up Parish Crag from Holmrook is straightforward enough, and the summit rewards you with views across the western fells that genuinely stop you in your tracks. It's not high - barely 300 metres - but what it lacks in elevation it makes up for with those sudden vistas across to the Lake District proper. The fell itself is unremarkable until you're up there, all windswept grass and scattered rocks, but the perspective shifts everything. From the top you can pick out Scafell Pike on a clear day, and the whole sweep of Wastwater glints below like someone's left the curtains open. Allow ninety minutes there and back if you're not hanging about. It's the sort of walk that works brilliantly as a morning tick-box before heading to the nearby coast, or a late-afternoon leg-stretcher if you're based at Fisherground Campsite, which sits just down the valley. Families with older kids will find it manageable, though there's nothing technical about it - no scrambling, no exposure. The real magic here is that it's accessible without feeling trivial. You get proper fell-walking sensations without needing to commit a full day. Go when the weather's cooperating because on a grey day it's just a damp trudge. But catch it right and it's genuinely worth the detour if you're camping locally.
