Parish Acre

A proper bit of ancient woodland just east of Royston, Parish Acre is the kind of place that rewards a decent walk without demanding a full day's commitment. The forest itself is small enough that you won't get lost, but deep enough that you'll genuinely feel like you've stepped away from Essex suburbia. Towering oaks and beech trees dominate, and there's a real sense of age here - these aren't plantation pines, they're the real deal.

You'll be walking on proper woodland paths, muddy after rain but manageable most of the year. The canopy is thick enough to make it atmospheric even on dull days. It's not a destination that'll fill an afternoon on its own, but it's the kind of addition that makes a forest walk proper interesting rather than just plodding around a forestry commission plantation.

Families with kids aged six upwards will get something from it - there's enough woodland character to capture young imaginations, though you won't find play equipment or visitor facilities. This is walker territory. Allow ninety minutes if you're taking your time; an hour if you're just threading through.

It works well as part of a wider Essex woodland circuit, and if you're based at Pightle Farm Campsite nearby, it's worth the short drive. Free access, no faffing about with car parks or entrance fees - just turn up and get stuck in. The best time is autumn when the light filters through the canopy properly, though spring bluebells can be decent too.
