Duxford Airfield

The moment you walk onto the tarmac at Duxford, you're standing on properly historic ground. This former RAF airfield near Royston has been converted into one of Britain's finest aviation museums, and it's the sort of place that grabs you whether you're mad about planes or just curious about what happened here during the war.

You'll see Spitfires, Lancasters, and dozens of other aircraft - some still airworthy, which means if you time it right, you might catch them actually flying. The hangars are enormous, packed with everything from WWI biplanes to Cold War jets, and the scale of it all hits you properly when you're standing underneath a B-17. There's a working control tower you can climb, and the American Air Museum is genuinely absorbing if you've got an hour to spare.

This works best for aviation enthusiasts and families with kids old enough to appreciate the technical side - under-sevens might find it exhausting without something specific to hook them. Allow at least three hours, longer if you're thorough. Check ahead for flying days, as these transform the experience entirely.

It's brilliantly positioned for a park holiday. Pightle Farm Campsite sits just three and a half miles away, while Shepreth Mill, rated exceptionally highly at 4.8 out of 5, is only four miles down the road. Both give you that rural Essex base without being in the thick of it. Royston itself has decent pubs and shops if you need to resupply.
