The drive up to Parham House winds through proper Sussex countryside, and when the Elizabethan manor finally appears through the trees, you understand why the owners have kept it largely unchanged for four centuries. Built in 1577, this is a working family home first, tourist attraction second - which means it retains character that more heavily managed properties lose entirely.

Inside, you're walking through rooms that feel lived-in. There's a four-poster bed where royalty actually slept, tapestries that aren't behind velvet ropes, and enough oak panelling to make you understand what people meant when they talked about Tudor wealth. The collection of paintings is genuinely strong, if not museum-famous. Downstairs, the kitchen garden is meticulously maintained, and the grounds roll back toward woodland in a way that justifies a proper afternoon here rather than a quick tick-box visit.

History enthusiasts and garden walkers will get the most from this - expect two to three hours minimum if you're not just power-walking the rooms. Families with very young children might find it a bit sedate. It's closed much of the year, so check before you travel from Patching.

If you're basing yourself at South Downs Caravan Park or Washington, Parham sits within reasonable striking distance. It's the sort of place that rewards a deliberate journey rather than a whim, but if you appreciate old houses that haven't been sanitised into sterility, it's worth the effort.
