Parc Bancffosfelen Park

The Afon Tywi winds through this nature reserve like it owns the place - which, in a sense, it does. Parc Bancffosfelen sits just outside Carmarthen and offers proper woodland walking without the tourist crush you'd get elsewhere in South Wales. The reserve protects a decent stretch of riverbank and mixed woodland, the kind of place where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just trudge past the same old paths.

It's genuinely worth an hour or two if you're into birds or riverside walks. The trees are old enough to feel established, and the river itself is the real draw - fast-moving and genuinely lovely when the light hits it right. Don't expect visitor facilities or cafes; this is the real thing, not a polished attraction. Bring proper boots if it's been wet.

Families with older kids will get on fine here. Younger children might tire once the novelty of "spotting things" wears off after thirty minutes. Serious walkers will appreciate the woodland management and the absence of crowds you'd battle at honeypot sites.

It works brilliantly as a half-day stop if you're based at Coedhirion Farm Holidays or Gwlad Glamping nearby. The proximity to Carmarthen means you're never far from a decent pub or proper lunch. Entry appears free, though it's worth checking locally as information isn't exactly plentiful online. Best visited in early morning when wildlife activity peaks and you'll have the place largely to yourself.
