Ponthenri Recreation Ground

The Ponthenri Recreation Ground is a proper working nature reserve just outside Carmarthen, where locals come to stretch their legs and spot whatever wildlife happens to be about. It's not one of those manicured attractions with visitor centres and gift shops - this is a straightforward bit of green space with walking paths that wind through grassland and woodland, the sort of place where you might see a buzzard if you're lucky or at least hear one calling overhead.

It's best suited to families wanting a quick walk without the theatrics, or to birdwatchers and botanists who like their reserves low-key and authentic. You could easily spend an hour here pottering about, though there's not loads to do if the weather turns or if you've got restless teenagers. The paths are manageable underfoot and it doesn't demand serious hiking kit.

Admission appears to be free, which is refreshing. There's no official information online about opening hours, though nature reserves are generally accessible during daylight. Spring and early summer are decent times to visit when wildflowers are up and birds are nesting.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Gwlad, Coedhirion Farm, or Route 47 are all within a few miles - Ponthenri works as a low-pressure morning jaunt before heading into Carmarthen town itself. It won't rival bigger reserves for spectacle, but it's genuine and free, which counts for something.
