Pant-y-llyn Hill

The walk up Pant-y-llyn Hill doesn't take long, but it rewards you with proper views across the Wye Valley and towards the Brecon Beacons. You're looking at roughly 45 minutes to the summit from Builth Wells, depending on your pace and which path you take. The terrain is mixed - some sections are straightforward track, others steeper and grassier, so decent boots make sense even though it's not a major undertaking.

This is one for walkers who want to bag a viewpoint without committing to a full day expedition. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the steeper bits tedious. On a clear day the outlook justifies the effort. Overcast weather though, and you're squinting at fields and patches of woodland without much reason to linger.

Builth Wells sits just a couple of miles away, making this an obvious half-morning option if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Celtic Woodland Holidays and Penmaenau Farm Camping are both close enough for a quick trip. The hill fits nicely into a broader Powys walking plan alongside bigger days in the Brecons.

There's no visitor infrastructure on the hill itself - no café, no car park facilities - so come prepared. It's free to walk, obviously, and open whenever you fancy it. The best light comes from the south-facing slopes in late afternoon, though that's when the wind tends to pick up.
