Pant Hill

The walk up Pant Hill, just outside Montgomery, takes about forty minutes at a steady pace and rewards you with proper views across the Powys countryside. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the big Welsh hills you might have driven past on the A5 - but on a clear day you can see for miles. The summit sits at 370 metres, which means it's accessible for most fitness levels without being a slog.

This is walker territory, really. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the steady climb tedious unless they're already keen on hills. There's something satisfying about reaching the top and having the landscape spread out below you - the sort of view that makes you understand why people bother with hills at all, even modest ones.

The approach is straightforward from Montgomery town, which is a proper little market town worth an hour's poke around anyway. Free to visit, naturally. Allow two hours if you want to dawdle and take photographs. Early morning is best if you want the light working with you rather than against you, and spring through autumn are your windows - winter can be boggy and grey.
