Panfield Wood

Walking into Panfield Wood near Braintree feels like stepping back in time. This is proper Essex woodland - the sort of place where you might actually bump into someone foraging for mushrooms rather than snapping selfies. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy closes overhead, and on a damp morning the whole place smells like earth and possibility.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, which means no entrance fees, no gift shop, no disappointments. You get mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually escape the sound of the A120. Walkers will love it - there's genuine room to roam without getting lost. Families with restless kids will get a solid hour out of it before the novelty of "look, a tree" wears thin. Nature photographers should visit after rain when the light hits differently.

Timing-wise, spring and autumn are best. Winter's wet and muddy. Summer's fine but can feel a bit muggy under all those leaves. There's no official visitor information, so turn up when you fancy and bring decent boots.
