Palmer's Ball

The view from Palmer's Ball, a modest peak just outside Petersfield, catches most people by surprise. You're standing at roughly 270 metres, which doesn't sound like much until you realise how far you can see across the Hampshire countryside - rolling fields, distant woodlands, and on a clear day, the South Downs ridge darkening the southern horizon.

It's a straightforward walk up from the town, taking perhaps thirty to forty minutes depending on your fitness. The climb isn't brutal, more steady than steep, and the footpaths are well-maintained. You'll pass through mixed woodland before breaking out onto open grassland near the summit.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that this was once a significant vantage point, though the peak itself doesn't draw the crowds of busier South Downs spots. That's partly the appeal - you get decent views without the chaos. Families with younger kids might find the walk a touch tedious if they're not committed walkers, but teenagers will manage it fine and often enjoy having a proper viewpoint to aim for rather than an aimless ramble.

If you're staying at Adhurst Yurts or Feather Down Manor Farm nearby, Palmer's Ball makes a sensible half-day outing to stretch the legs. It's the sort of place that rewards good weather - fog renders it fairly pointless - so check the forecast before committing. Allow two hours return including time to sit and take it in.
