Pale Bank

Pale Bank is essentially a long earthwork that runs across moorland near Tadcaster - the sort of place you'd walk right past if someone hadn't told you what to look for. It's a linear prehistoric defensive feature, probably Iron Age, and it's genuinely impressive once you understand what you're looking at: a substantial bank and ditch carved into the landscape centuries before Romans showed up. The site sits on exposed moorland, so views are wide and the wind can be fairly bracing, but that openness is part of the appeal.

This is strictly for people who get excited about archaeology and landscape history. You won't find interpretation panels or facilities - it's just the earthwork itself against the Yorkshire moorland. Walking it takes a good hour if you're properly exploring, though you can see the main section in half that. The nearest substantial shelter is back in Tadcaster, which is a working market town rather than a visitor hub.

It works well as a structured walk if you're staying at Wighill Park Glamping just down the road - close enough for a morning outing without eating a full day. Go in drier months; the moorland can get boggy. This isn't somewhere to drag reluctant teenagers, but for proper history walkers and archaeology types, it's a straightforward and free piece of Iron Age Yorkshire that doesn't require advance planning or bookings.
