Palaeolithic Remains

The Palaeolithic remains scattered across this Essex site are genuinely striking if you know what you're looking at. We're talking 400,000-year-old stone tools and evidence of early human activity - flint artefacts that predate most of Britain's recorded history by a staggering margin. It's not a museum with visitor centres and gift shops; this is the real thing, evidence in situ of how our ancestors lived and hunted across what was then a very different landscape.

Walking the area, especially if you've bothered to read up beforehand, gives you an odd sense of perspective. These people were here. Allow a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested, less if you're just passing through. There's no formal admission charge or opening hours to worry about - it's essentially open access - but do check locally before heading out, as access conditions can shift.
